Visiting the Iconic Rod & Reel Pier (2025)

While Anna Maria Island is rightfully known for its sugar sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and laid-back island vibes, some establishments on the island have their own claim to fame. Among its many seasoned spots, the Rod and Reel Pier has long been a favorite for both the island's residents and its visitors.

For over 75 years, the Rod and Reel Pier has been one of the most cherished spots on Anna Maria Island. Whether you were stopping by for a plate of fresh seafood, casting into the Gulf, or simply enjoying the unparalleled waterfront views, the pier was a truly beloved spot on AMI.

However, like much of Anna Maria Island, the Rod and Reel Pier has faced challenges over the years, and the most recent hurricanes dealt a devastating blow.

Hurricane Destruction and the Road to Rebuilding

In September and October of 2024, respectively, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton hit the island hard, leaving behind widespread damage. The Rod and Reel Pier was among the hardest hit. The pier and restaurant were completely destroyed, leaving only debris floating in the storm's wake.

For many, it was heartbreaking to see such a beloved landmark reduced to ruins. The pier had been a second home for its employees, a favorite haunt for locals, and a must-visit spot for tourists visiting AMI.

What's Next for the Rod and Reel Pier?

Despite the destruction, Oli Lemke, owner of the Rod and Reel Pier, is determined to revive the iconic establishment.

As of early 2025, they have been working through the seemingly never-ending permitting process required to reconstruct the pier and restaurant. While the timeline is still uncertain, support from the community and messages from the owner are keeping hope alive.

A ` GoFundMe campaign was launched to help fund the rebuild, with donations going toward employee payroll, insurance, and planning efforts. Unfortunately, when Lemke bought the Rod and Reel Pier back in 2023, the building was uninsurable, so all funds came straight from the community and Lemke himself.

To date, over $90,000 has been raised toward the $300,000 goal. Plans for the rebuild are still in progress, but the team behind the Rod and Reel Pier is actively working with local and state agencies to make it happen.

What the Rod and Reel Pier Meant to Visitors

Experiencing Rod and Reel Pier before its destruction, as well as seeing the community rally behind Oliver Lemke, it's clear just how much people adored this spot.

  • Fishing: Many visitors loved how easy it was to drop a line and catch something right off the pier. Families loved that they could rent rods on-site and fish without needing a license.
  • Food: The restaurant was known locally for its fresh seafood, particularly its grouper sandwiches, fish and chips, and homemade key lime pie. Visitors couldn't get enough of the laid-back, no-frills atmosphere that only added to its popularity.
  • Sunsets and Views: One of the top reasons people visited was for the sweeping views of Tampa Bay. Sitting outside and enjoying a cold drink while dolphins pass was a beloved memory for many AMI residents and our visitors.

What to Do in the Area While the Pier is Rebuilt

Located at the southern end of the island, Coquina Beach offers expansive sandy shores, shaded picnic areas, and a walking path along the Gulf. It's a lovely spot for basking in the sun, beachcombing or taking a leisurely stroll while waiting for the piers to reopen.

Explore Bean Point

For those looking for a peaceful, scenic spot to relax, Bean Point is one of the most secluded and beautiful areas on the island and one of our personal favorites. Located at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island, it offers pure white sand, clear water, and a quieter atmosphere compared to the busier public beaches.
