1. Bean Point, Anna Maria Island

  • Northern tip of Anna Maria Island
  • Best for: Seclusion and diverse shells

Bean Point is one of our favorite hidden gems tucked away at the northern end of AMI. Its relatively secluded atmosphere and pristine, peaceful beaches make it a top destination for shelling enthusiasts who are looking for a sense of peace and, of course, beautiful views.

Bean Point is known to locals for its wide variety of sea glass and shells, from sand dollars to fighting conch, and it's less crowded than most other beaches, which provides ample space to explore. The gulf waters here are particularly calm, making it perfect for spotting shells along the store, especially after a passing storm. Its off-the-beaten path location all but guarantees that even on busy weekends, you can find quiet areas for a relaxed experience.

Take note that taking live shells is illegal. If you're collecting, be sure there isn't a little critter who's made a home there!

2. Sanibel Island

  • Southwest Florida, near Fort Myers
  • Best for: Abundance of rare shells

Sanibel Island is internationally famous for shelling, and for good reason. The unique east-west orientation acts like a huge scoop, taking in thousands of shells with each high tide. If you're looking for rare and exotic finds, such as the elusive Junonia or lightning whelk, this is the place to be.

In addition to a wide variety of shells, the beautiful surroundings that cover Sanibel Island are also a reason to visit.  Bowman's Beach and  Blind Pass Beach are two of the most beautiful spots on the island, where you'll also find heaps of shells, particularly in the early mornings.

There's even an annual Shell Festival, held each year in March. The 2025 rendition will be the festival's 88th year!

3. South Beach

  • Marco Island, Southwest Florida
  • Best for: Peaceful shelling with easy access

Not to be mistaken with the semi-infamous South Beach in Miami, the one we're referring to is on the west coast of South Florida, just south of Fort Meyers and Naples. This is a wonderful hidden gem for shelling enthusiasts. Relative to the beaches on the northern end of the island, South Beach is quieter, with a more relaxed atmosphere. It's a great spot to collect shells without the throngs of tourists - and also for snorkeling!

The calm Gulf of Mexico and its expansive sandy shores create ideal conditions for shelling, especially early in the morning or after a storm. You can find many shell varieties here, including alphabet cones, tulip shells, and the occasional rare Junonia.

4. Egmont Key

Accessible only by boat or ferry,  Egmont Key is a tiny, uninhabited island at the mouth of Tampa Bay, just across from AMI and St. Pete's Beach. Egmont Key is a protected state park, popular with tourists for its historic lighthouse, Civil War-era ruins, and, of course, myriad of shell species ready to be discovered.

The untouched shores of Egmont Key are scattered with a variety of shells, including conchs, sand dollars, and scallops. Its remoteness and clear waters create a perfect environment for shell collectors, especially if you're looking to avoid crowded beaches. If you're lucky, you may even spot some wildlife, too, including dolphins and sea turtles!

  • Dunedin, off the coast
  • Best for: Natural beauty and abundant shells

Off the coast of Dunedin on Florida's west coast, you'll find one of two popular barrier islands for shelling - Caladesi Island. You can reach the island by ferry or boat from Dunedin,

Caladesi Island is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Florida, meaning its beaches are filled to the brim with great shells, thanks to minimal human interference. Whether you're on the lookout for scallops, coquinas, or even simple clam shells, Caladesi Island's shores provide a variety from which to choose.

6. Honeymoon Island
