SURROUNDING AREA:
The surrounding area known as “Land of the Waterfalls” has approximately 250 waterfalls. For the hiking and biking enthusiast, Transylvania County has 2 State Parks and a National Park; Gorges State Park, Dupont State Forest, and the Pisgah National Forest. The Gorges State Park has an entrance to the east and west of Lake Toxaway in Sapphire and Rosman; it is the most challenging of the 3 Parks for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The Pisgah National Forest has approximately 180 miles of hiking and biking trails, and 100 miles of horseback riding trails. It also has camping, fishing, hunting, and Looking Glass Falls – the most photographed waterfall south of Niagara. Panther Town Valley, which is part of the Pisgah National Forest, adjoins Lake Toxaway Estates. Dupont State Forest has 85 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. World Renowned Fly Fishing Guides from Davidson River Outfitters operate in the State & National Parks, and in trout streams in Lake Toxaway. Transylvania County is called, “Camp Country USA” for its Mecca of summer camps.

Transylvania County may be short on Disneyesque costumed characters, but its storybook charm and opportunities for adventure have delighted the young — and the young at heart — for over a century. It’s a natural amusement park with thrilling rides, magical scenery, interesting wildlife, hands-on arts and education, a killer toy store in the center of downtown Brevard and what might possibly be the best natural waterside around – Sliding Rock.

Lake Toxaway is Western North Carolina’s largest private lake, located at a 3010 foot elevation. With 14 miles of shoreline and 640 acres, this lake has pristine, drinkable quality water. The lake boasts a constant water level achieved by over a hundred streams and springs that fed the lake. Even in the extreme and exceptional drought of 2007 our water level was at full pool. Lake Toxaway is popular for boating, fishing, skiing, sailing and many other water sports. This private lake does not allow jet skis.

Lake Toxaway is surrounded by State and National Forests and Parks. Bordering the 5000 acres of Lake Toxaway Estates is the 10,000 acre Panthertown Valley Wilderness Area, part of the Nantahala National Forest, the 11,000 acre Gorges State Park, and the Pisgah National Forest. All of these parks and forest offer abundant opportunities to hike, view waterfalls, mountain bike, fly fish, camp and even hunt.

Ideally located halfway between Cashiers and Brevard – famous for the Brevard Music Festival and just over an hour to the Biltmore Estates in Asheville.

Historic Hendersonville is just 45 minutes away featuring the Flat Rock Playhouse.

Between the forests, the rivers, the lakes and the waterfalls, there are countless sites for family camping, picnicking, cycling and just letting young imaginations run wild. And if that isn’t enough to entice the child in your backseat, perhaps they just need to spend a little time with the salamanders over at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education or get the lowdown on Saturn’s Rings up at P.A.R.I. Crafty kids will appreciate family-friendly classes at several of the studios located on the 276 Art tour, including Mud Dabbers. And almost every single one of Transylvania County’s festivals has dedicated kid space and more things to excite your favorite elementary-schooler than she could shake a pixie-stick at. So when you’re planning your next family vacation, the question is not, “What can the kids do?” but “How can we possibility do it all?”

Guest Testimonials

This is an outstanding place.

Rated 5 out of 5
January 10, 2021

This is an outstanding place. We have enjoyed a wonderful experience enjoying this spot as our home base for a couple of weeks, as a cozy and homey environment with impotent mountain views. We fully recommend it. So much so, that we will be coming back for a full month to benefit again from what this has to offer. It’s not only the place, but also the outstanding and responsive service we received from Terry (the property manager), and the local team made up by Norma and Tim, who ensured everything was running smoothly. All our questions and needs were met beyond our expectations. Including an upgrade to the bed that Terry and the team managed to do in record time during our stay! You can confidently disregard any mentions prior to Dec 2020 about the bed not being that comfortable. Not the case anymore! You’ll now get to experience a new and very comfortable king bed, from which, every morning, you’ll be able to spot the gorgeous sunrise showing up through the living room window. If you’re an early riser, you can then step into the porch to enjoy some of the most awe inspiring sunrise views overlooking the national park. As digital nomads and creators, we always look for well-equipped places to live like locals and that can provide us with an inspiring environment, both on the interior of the place, as well as on the surrounding areas. This place —and the team behind it— delivers that and more!
My Response:
Hi Leo,
Thank you so much for your glowing five star review and thank you again for being out guests. I has been a pleasure working and having you as our guests.
Sincerely,
Terry, Sandy & Family

A Reflective Place for Contemplation

I booked this property on a whim to extend a writing retreat into a working holiday. I am so glad I did! I got to catch up on grading sitting on a porch overlooking one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen! The property itself is so quiet and peaceful you feel as if you are in another world. Rain or shine, I walked and ran the trail below the pool every day. The waterfall is gorgeous, but even more so the overlooks on the planned development. You are also centrally located for Panther Valley, Gorges, and other nearby hiking. I partook as much as the rain and my work schedule allowed. The property itself is well-equipped with everything I needed. I cooked all my meals so having tools in the kitchen was lovely. The bed could be more comfortable and the WiFi was a bit spotty here and there, but these small things do not distract from the overall comfort of reading beside the fire or eating breakfast above the orange and purple mountains with sparkling green-blue lakes. I plan to come back sooner rather than later.
